Boldly Before the Throne of Grace // Praying to the God of Small Things

“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16, KJV).

“Too often, we pray puny prayers” Hiram Kemp said in a lesson at PTP yesterday, and he is so right. Too often we pray to Him like He doesn’t actually hear or care about our problems – like He isn’t big enough to care about the whole world and we as individuals at the same time.

But God can handle it all and wants to handle it all. He wants us to cast every care on Him, big or small – and we need to believe that and pray like we believe it.

He is the God of everything – even the things we may be tempted to think are too small for Him to care about.

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you (1 Peter 5:7)

// Why should we pray to God about the small things?

Realising that God is one who cares about all aspects of your life helps you to cultivate a strong relationship with Him. Big things show you how you need to draw closer and cling tighter but it’s the little things – the everyday, mundane things – that build up your faith and trust for when the big things come along.

God cares about your little struggles because He knows that that’s where the big struggles start and He wants you to bring them to Him because He knows that’s where relationships start.

// Things to Consider when Praying About the Small Things

  1. What things have been worrying me that I haven’t taken to God? Those seemingly “little” things, like your struggles with your attitude during your daily tasks, your body image issues, your allergies that have you feeling less-than-wonderful, the way you can’t seem to help glancing over at that guy at the gym, or the little doubts and fears that you keep suppressing. Understand this: God cares about it all. These “little” things turn into big things – so start praying here and now, rather than waiting until the problem is “big enough”.
  2. What small things contribute to my big problems? When you find yourself struggling with a big temptation, consider what it is that actually causes you to stumble.  We don’t just find ourselves in sin – it’s a progression. Think of the steps and pray for help step-by-step.
  3. What small blessings do I need to thank God for? Thank God for the little things. You don’t have to wonder if He gave it to you – if it’s good, it came from Him (James 1:17). Cultivate gratitude with the little things – and give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

// P R A Y E R \\

Oh Lord God,

I’m thankful that you are the God of my little struggles as much as you are the God of the bigger things. You are the Master of the Universe, but you are also the Master of my life – every piece of it.

Sometimes I forget that – I try to struggle along by myself and things get out of balance.

Help me to realise your full and complete provision, oh God. Help me to think of you first, before all else – whenever I am grateful, hurt, sad, angry, lonely, depressed, or frustrated. Help me to call on you always – whether I need the mountains moved, or simply the strength to do what needs to be done today with a good attitude.

You are an ever patient and loving God who cares about everything I am going through. I know that while others may not understand me, you understand me completely in all my complexity. You will not spurn or laugh at any request I ask in faith according to your will and for that, I am so very grateful.

Increase my faith.

Forgive me for the times I have forgotten to seek your guidance and have left you out of some aspect of my life. I thank you for your patience, provision, and wisdom that you have granted me so far and pray that you give me the strength to draw ever nearer.

You are the God who can move mountains and who keeps my tears in a bottle. You care about my every struggle, small and great. Increase my faith so that I may trust in your power to bring me through every one.

In the name of Your Dear Son, I humbly pray,

Amen

Please note: This is a sample prayer and by no means what you have to pray. Pray boldly and specifically to the Father about your problems and in your language. Praise Him for this wonderful attribute of His and petition Him for your every need.

May God bless you as you learn to give Him everything – even every small little problem!

In Him,

Chantelle Marie

// Scriptures to Focus on:

“Pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:17, 18 ESV).

“Casting all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7 ESV).

“Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you” (Matthew 17:19, 20 ESV).

“You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?” (Psalm 56:8)

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6, 7).
